It is in some ways a more interesting story than Goodfellas, and it also shows how predatory mobsters could be against each other for no reason other than their loyalty to the bosses back east. The scene where Ace’s scumbag buddy Nicky Santoro goes after his drug-addicted trophy wife is one of the best examples of this in the movie. In fact, this is one of the few times that Casino’s violence feels justified. It isn’t for shock value, but for a sense of realism. This is what makes the film so effective.
